BTVB annual Open House and City Tour

In Celebration of National Tourism Month, the Bucyrus Tourism and Visitors' Bureau will hold its annual OPEN HOUSE on Wednesday, May 15th, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The public is invited to attend, so PLEASE stop in to say hello!!

Visitors will can meet those instrumental (BTVB staff and volunteers) in helping the bureau mark its 12th year of "helping other discover Bucyrus."

There will be displays of all types and demonstrations on how the BTVB books a tour. Bucyrus Mayor, Roger Moore, will make an appearance at noon and Mr. Richard Wiener, the German Music Accordian Player, will be playing from 12:15 to 2:00 p.m.

Cookies will be served by Morning Glory Bakery in Bucyrus and there will be door prizes drawn from the D. Picking Company, Bogey Grill, Carle's Bratwurst, Crossroad Candles, Gus' Grill & Grog, and Dillinger's Event Center.

Then on June 19th, the BTVB will host the annual BUCYRUS CITY TOUR. There are only 8 tickets left for spots on the bus. Tours of the city are $20.

New this year: The public is invited to attend the day's special luncheon engagement. It will be held at the Dillinger's Event Center starting at 11:45 a.m., and will feature a guest speaker as always. Tickets for the luncheon engagement are required. Cost is $10 per person and they should be purchased from the bureau by Monday, May 13th.

This year we are pleased to have our luncheon speaker be former Bucyrian, Lt. Col. Todd Miller, son of John and Sandy Miller. He is a retired officer who has had several tours of Iraq and Afganistan and now works with returning veterans. Lt. Col. Miller will speak on his current duties plus offer Q and A time.

FUN FACTS ABOUT BUCYRUS, OHIO

1.) The first daily weather reports were started on December 24, 1887 in the Evening Telegraph.
2.) In 1942 Camp Millard, a training camp for the 753rd Railway Shop Battalion was established at the fairgrounds to train men during World War II.
3.) A.D. Juillard, founder of the Juillard School of Music, helped establish our public library.
4.) In 1838, a mastodon skeleton was uncovered by Abraham Hahn, in a shallow, but swampy area of Bucyrus.
5.) Bucyrus native, Lauretta Schimmoler, is noted for first proposing the establishment of a flight nurse section in the U.S. Army Nurse Reserve - 1933.
6.) John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed) had one of his apple tree nurseries where the Bucyrus Arby’s is located today.
7.) 77 Bucyrus Steam Shovels helped excavate more than 2,780,000 pounds of dirt to build the Panama Canal.
8.) More than 27 tons of traditional German Bratwurst is served during the annual Bucyrus Bratwurst Festival.
9.) We have 4 great local area school districts: Buckeye Central, Bucyrus City, Colonel Crawford, and Wynford.

JUNE 1 & 2, 2013

LOWE VOLK PARK ANNUAL LIVING HISTORY EVENT

This annual event focuses on life in Ohio during the 1800 and early 1900 centuries of the United States when settlers were moving west from the eastern colonies.

Step into the past and learn from military and American Indian camps set up by Colonel Crawford’s Company.

Both days there will be featured demonstrations of crafts, skills and daily living activities from that era.

There will also be the re-enactment of the capture of Colonel Crawford by the local revolutionary war group  near Lowe-Volk Park.
